A COMPARATIVE STUDY OF PHENOMENOLOGICAL MODELS OF MR BRAKE BASED ON NEURAL NETWORKS APPROACH
2013
In this paper a full-scale commercially available magnetorheological (MR) brake installed in a semi-active suspension (SAS) system is modeled and simulated. Two well-known phenomenological hysteresis models are explored: Bouc–Wen and Dahl ones. In particular, influence of their parameters on the response is evaluated and assessed. The next step is to introduce the artificial neural networks and discuss their application in the field of systems identification. Subsequently, two feedforward neural networks are created and trained to estimate parameters characterizing each of the MR damper models described. The semi-active suspension (SAS) system equipped with a MR brake is described and the …
Magnetorheology: Fluids, Structures and Rheology
2002
Magnetorheological suspensions are complex fluids which show a transition from a liquid behavior to a solid one upon application of a magnetic field. This transition is due to the the attractive dipolar forces between the particles which have been magnetized by the applied field. The formation of a network of particles or aggregates throughout the suspension is the basic phenomena which is responsible for the strength of the solid phase. In this paper we shall give an overview on the fluids and their properties and we shall especially emphasize the interplay between magnetic forces which are responsible for the gelling of the suspension and on the other hand of hydrodynamic and thermal forc…
Semiactive Control Methodologies for Suspension Control With Magnetorheological Dampers
2012
Authors version of an article published in the journal: IEEE/ASME Transactions on Mechatronics. Also available from the publisher at: http://dx.doi.org/10.1109/TMECH.2011.2107331 Suspension systems are one of the most critical components of transportation vehicles. They are designed to provide comfort to the passengers to protect the chassis and the freight. Suspension systems are normally provided with dampers that mitigate these harmful and uncomfortable vibrations. In this paper, we explore two control methodologies (in time and frequency domain) used to design semiactive controllers for suspension systems that make use of magnetorheological dampers. These dampers are known because of th…
Heuristic and Backstepping Control Strategies for Semiactive Suspension in Automotive Systems Equipped with MR Dampers
2010
Abstract This paper deals with the problem of semiactive vibration reduction in a class of automotive systems. Most conventional suspensions use passive devices to absorb impacts and vibrations, which is generally difficult to adapt to the uncertain circumstances. Semiactive suspension techniques promise a solution to the above problem with some comparatively better features than active and passive suspension devices. In this work, the semiactive suspension with magnetorheological (MR) dampers is applied for the vibration attenuation. Both backstepping and heuristic control strategies are proposed. In the design of backstepping controller, the Dahl model of the MR damper is used to estimate…
Semiactive Backstepping Control for Vibration Reduction in a Structure with Magnetorheological Damper Subject to Seismic Motions
2009
The use of magnetorheological (MR) dampers for mitigating vibrations caused by seismic motions in civil engineering structures has attracted much interest in the scientific community because of the advantages of this class of device. It is known that MR dampers can generate high damping forces with low energy requirements and low cost of production. However, the complex dynamics that characterize MR dampers make difficult the control design for achieving the vibration reduction goals in an efficient manner. In this article, a semiactive controller based on the backstepping technique is proposed. The controller was applied to a three-story building with an MR damper at its first floor subje…
Features of magnetorheology of biocompatible chain-forming ferrofluids with multi-core magnetic nanoparticles: Experiment and simulation
2020
Abstract We study the magnetorheological properties and structural transitions in novel aqueous colloidal suspensions of magnetic nanoparticles developed for biomedical applications. Defined-shape field-tunable superparamagnetic nanoparticles with clustered cores and their suspensions are produced. The region of intermediate magnetic coupling strength between colloidal ferrofluids and magnetorheological suspensions is systematically studied for the first time. Hybrid numerical simulations with hydrodynamic interactions provide full structural information. The distinctive features of the rheograms are related to transitions between Brownian and persistent microstructure, shape anisotropy, co…
An iterative based approach for hysteresis parameters estimation in Magnetorheological dampers
2012
The following work entails the problem of regenerating the hysteresis loop in the Magnetorheological (MR) dampers. The collected data from tests are not sufficient neither efficient for designing optimal controls compensating for the hysteresis in the dampers. This work presents an iterative based approach for estimating the hysteresis parameters, the method however can be generalized for different kind of dampers or actuators hence the hysteresis loop can be generalized using available test data. Some assumptions can be introduced in order to facilitate the underlines of the parameters estimation, one of the assumptions in this work is to use predetermined hysteresis parameters and regener…
Firefly optimization used to identify hysteresis parameter on rotational MR-damper
2014
In his paper the physical properties and mathematical models of a semi-active magnetorheological (MR) damper is studied. The considered models are the Dahl model and Bouc-Wen model. The parameters for these models are found by using a firefly optimization algorithm that minimizes the difference between experimental and simulated data. The objective of his paper is to compare different mathematical MR-damper models with the experimental data. The simulation results illustrate he effectiveness of he proposed optimization algorithm.
Preliminary design of a magnetorheological brake for automotive use
2011
After an initial study of the characteristics of magnetorheological fluids based on a thorough search in literature, a preliminary configuration of MR brake is proposed. It comes from the evaluation of the main factors influencing the design of an appropriate magnetic circuit, and then the performance obtained in terms of brake torque. The analytical study of the brake has allowed a first preliminary sizing. Through the subsequent execution of an electromagnetic finite element model, created in ANSYS, it was possible to assess more accurately the distribution of the magnetic field inside the MR fluid and hence the resistance to relative motion between rotor and stator. The work needs an acc…
Permeability measurements in cobalt ferrite and carbonyl iron powders and suspensions
2002
Abstract Magnetic permeability data of cobalt ferrite and carbonyl iron suspensions are discussed. Using an induction method, the relative differential permeability, μr,dif, was measured as a function of the internal magnetic field for different volume fractions of the solid phase. In the case of cobalt ferrite suspensions, the μr,dif−H curve was obtained for a first increasing ramp of magnetic field (data series “1”), a decreasing ramp (data series “2”), and the second increasing one (data series “3”). Series “1” showed a maximum in the μr,dif−H trend that did not appear in series “2” and “3”. Furthermore, the data in series “2” and “3” are always below those in series “1”. The latter beha…
